Keyboard players. Handel, Bach, Eckard,
Schobert, Mozart, Müthel, &c. It falls to the
keyboardist to place the key and tempo
before the singer’s lips.
Commentary
This reference to Mozart comes from an article titled “Tonkunst,” listing notable performers, composers, and music literature. Schubart reused a phrase from his obituary of Johann Gottlieb Sämann in the Deutsche Chronik auf das Jahr 1775: “Er [Sämann] war ein sehr guter Klavierspieler, und wenige verstanden die Kunst besser, ein Orchester mit dem Flügel zu begleiten, und dem Sänger Ton und Zeitmaaß auf die Lippen zu legen.” (118)
The prolific Schubart mentioned Mozart on a number of other occasions (see Dokumente 138, 274, 325, 348, 432; Neue Folge, 109–10, 127–30); see also our entries for 1786, 28 Dec 1790, and 23 Dec 1791.
