Ludwig Fischer in Mannheim, and three other new documents
Posted: Mon, 17 Jul 2023
We have just added four new documents to our site:
On the primary sources for the Frankurt premiere of Die Entführung aus dem Serail, given by the company of Gustav Friedrich Wilhelm Großmann.
An entirely new commentary by Dexter Edge on the Mannheim premiere of Mozart’s opera, replacing our original entry published in 2014. The new commentary includes an image of an early manuscript copy of the (otherwise lost) poster for the premiere and provides detailed information about the cast.
In 1785, the bass Ludwig Fischer, who created the role of Osmin in the original production of Die Entführung aus dem Serail in Vienna in 1782, made guest appearances in that role in both Mannheim and Frankfurt. Dexter Edge’s commentary on Fischer’s appearance in Mannheim surveys the singer’s career and reception, and includes several new documents.
Updates:
- 28 Oct 1769 & 2 Mar 1771. Images have been added from Ortes’s letters to Hasse.
- 1784, Paisiello and Idomeneo. We have added an image of a pencil portrait of Giuseppe Bridi.
- 9 Feb 1791. We have added a Löschenkohl engraving of the court sleigh ride referred to in the article from Gazzetta universale.
